In Massachusetts and Maine, you pay a 5-cent deposit and get your 5 cents back when you return it. It's additional to the cost of whatever you're purchasing.
Took the words right out of my mouth 11:56... they're giving you your money back. Although, it is always a good day when you take a semester's worth of empties back and get a "free" case.
How does that encourage alcoholism? You realize you have to pay an extra 10 cents for every can when you buy it in the first place. You're just getting your 10 cents back when you recycle.
getting 10 cents back is really just encouraging homelessness...bum's are running rampant in michigan, breaking into houses in east lansing just to get some money to feed their heroin addictions...shits not cool
Michigan 10 cents per can, if the store sells it they must take it back. People in Michigan save cans for most of the year then take them back in bulk. Oh and the cost of soda/beer remains the same across the country, they don't add the cost on, that's just a myth. In fact a beer in California actually costs more than one in Michigan and you don't get crap back in California (by weight only).
They do charge a 10 cent deposit in Michigan. It's called a deposit for a reason. Look at your receipt some time and you'll see they they charge the deposit separately.
